Cyprus: When the two sides want different solutions there’s no point to negotiations

Complaining about the “equal distances” and Guterres’ reluctance to place greater emphasis on Turkey’s violations in Varosha, the government and parties, perhaps calculatingly, have missed what the UNSG was actually hinting at — that the UN peace process was nearing its end.

All this would indicate that the UNSG is in the process of giving up on the Cyprus peace efforts.

The Greek Cypriot side would have nothing substantive to gain from the UN abandoning its “policy of equal distances,” and blaming the Turkish side for the current deadlock. The government could use it for domestic consumption but nothing tangible would be gained.
